Characterization of hypertensive workers at the Provincial Criminal Investigation Unit of Pinar del Río

Introduction: Hypertension in Cuba shows a high prevalence and is the main risk factor for coronary heart disease and the leading cause of death in the country. Objective: To identify the factors associated with high blood pressure in hypertensive workers belonging to the Provincial Criminal Investigation Unit in the period from January to December 2023. Method: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study with analytical aspects was carried out at the Provincial Criminal Investigation Unit from January to December 2023. The universe consisted of all hypertensive workers in this unit (52), who were included in the study after applying exclusion and exit criteria. Information was obtained from individual medical records. Results: Male sex and the 40-49 age group predominated. The predominant skin color was black and mixed-race (mestizo), standing out in the group aged 50 and over. A predominance of overweight and normal-weight patients was demonstrated. Physical inactivity, smoking habits, and associated chronic diseases prevailed. Conclusions: The following risk factors were identified: male sex, 40-49 age group, black and mixed skin color, overweight, lack of physical exercise, and being a smoker.
